Virtual Workshops: Breastfeeding & Safe Sleep Insights
CWHA’s breastfeeding and safe sleep workshops are interactive 3-hour virtual workshops that help pregnant and birthing people learn about breastfeeding benefits, techniques & challenges as well as how to create a safe sleep environment for babies. Taking place on the second Wednesday of every month, these workshops aim to increase breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity, as well as decreasing sleep-related infant deaths.
CWHA also hosts a monthly breastfeeding support group to offer further lactation assistance to our clients. The support group takes place virtually on the first Wednesday of the month.

No-Cost Doula Support At CWHA
The largest no-cost community-based doula service provider in New York City
Caribbean Women’s Health Association is now the largest no-cost community-based doula service provider in New York City. Doulas are trained pregnancy, birth, and postpartum professionals who can help people achieve a healthy, safe, and satisfying pregnancy, birthing, and parenting experience. Doulas provide educational, physical, emotional, and practical support to pregnant persons and their families before, during, and after childbirth. In addition to these services, community-based doulas are integral to improving maternal health because there is a deeper connection to the advancement of birth justice – they are members of the communities they serve; they are trained in historical, educational, and cultural content on how race, institutional and interpersonal bias, and social determinants of health affect communities of color, they provide extra home visits and early linkage to services and referrals, and are cost-accessible to the community. Doula support includes:
- Non-judgmental assistance throughout the maternal health journey
- Assistance navigating culturally appropriate resources
- Providing relevant, factual, and timely information
- Informing clients about the bodily changes they may experience
- Advocating for clients’ birth plans & preferences and help them communicate decisions to family and hospital staff
- Hands on labor support such as breathing, relaxation, positioning, and massage
- Encouraging strategies for self-care, healing from a c-section or difficult birth, nutritional guidance, transitioning into parenthood
Encouraging strategies for newborn care, sleeping, breastfeeding, soothing, and warning signs.
Doula Support Benefits
Reduce racial inequities in birth and postpartum outcomes

- Shorter labor/ lesser induced labor
- Less pain medication
- Decreased need for instruments (forceps or vacuums) during vaginal birth
- Lower C-section rate
- Decreased risk of baby being premature or having low birth weight
- Higher APGAR scores for baby (heart rate, respiration, muscle tone)
- Decreased risk of baby being sent to NICU (neonatal ICU (Intensive Care Unit))
- Breastfeeding earlier & longer
- Improved parent-baby bonding
